Finis Tempo Trainer
The Finis Tempo Trainer is one of the handiest items you need to have in your training bag. It is small, lightweight and one of the most effective gadgets that can help you improve your swimming training.
How does the Finis Tempo Trainer work?
The Tempo Trainer is an electronic device that can be tucked under your swim cap or to your goggle’s strap with a strap holder. It produces an audible beep that can clearly be heard even under water. After setting up the device, the challenge is keeping your pace with it which means every time you hear the beep, your hand has to touch the water and pull. Each beep is equivalent to one of your hands touching the water.
The device works in three different modes. The first mode makes a beep sound down to 1/10 of a second. You can set it to beep from 0.2 to 99.99 seconds and works best when setting up a stroke rate. The second mode features a lap time where you can set the timer to beep every second. This feature will go right up to 9 minutes and 59 seconds. The third mode is similar to the first mode but it allows you to set up the beep to strokes per minute.
My Thoughts on the Finis Tempo Trainer
When I use the trainer, I normally set it to mode 1 or 2. For example, when doing 10 x 50-metre freestyle within 55 seconds. Swimmers can set the clock to 55 seconds and start swimming. You will hear a beep every 55 seconds which means you don’t need a pace clock. You also have the option to tailor it according to your needs.
If I want to try and increase my stroke rate, I set the trainer to mode 1 and adjust the setting according to my needs. A good starting point would be 0.60. Depending on your fitness level, you should be able to do all 10 laps. The goal is to be a little worn out by the end of the set. If you lower the time to 0.45, you will find swimming with the Finis Tempo Trainer very challenging. This is a great investment for a swimmer who is only starting out or wanting to improve.
